What Is UberX?
UberX is the most popular and affordable private ride from Uber. It is the standard service you will find in nearly every city where Uber operates.
About 82% of Uber drivers work on UberX, making it the backbone of the platform. It is perfect for everyday travel, commuting, or running errands, and is designed to be a reliable, lower-cost alternative to a traditional taxi.
What to Expect
UberX is the budget-friendly option, but there are still standards for vehicles and drivers to keep your trip safe and comfortable.
- The Cars: UberX vehicles are standard, four-door sedans in good condition. Common models include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima. They are not luxury cars, but they must meet Uber's age and safety rules. In most markets, vehicles must be 15 or 16 years old or newer, though this varies by city. Cars must have four doors, working air conditioning, seat at least four passengers, and pass a vehicle inspection. They cannot be ex-taxis, former driving school cars, government vehicles, branded cars, or rebuilt vehicles.
- The Drivers: Drivers must pass Uber's background checks and have a valid driver's license and personal auto insurance. There is no minimum trip count or rating requirement beyond Uber's general rules.
- The Price: UberX offers the lowest base fare. The price is calculated using time and distance, plus any fees or surge pricing. In many cities, Uber now uses upfront pricing, so you see the full fare before you book. UberX costs about 20 to 40 percent less than Uber Comfort and roughly 2.1 times less per mile than Uber Black.
- Free Wait Time: Your UberX driver will wait up to 5 minutes at the pickup spot at no extra charge. After that, wait time fees apply.
Bringing a Pet? Use Uber Pet (An UberX Option)
If you want to travel with your dog or cat, Uber Pet is almost always an UberX ride. You can bring one pet per trip, and there are no breed or size limits.
Drivers can still choose not to accept a pet if they feel the animal is too large or if they have concerns about their car. In Singapore, Uber launched uberPET in May 2026, and in some markets the pet surcharge is being waived for a limited time.
Schedule an UberX in Advance
You can now book UberX rides ahead of time through Uber Economy Reserve. This feature lets you schedule an UberX trip up to seven days in advance. You can also use Uber Reserve to book up to 90 days ahead, lock in your price, and enjoy 5 extra minutes of free wait time at pickup. Reserve is available on UberX in many cities.
UberX May Match You With a Robotaxi
In select cities, when you book an UberX or Uber Comfort ride, you might be matched with a driverless autonomous vehicle.
This started in Dubai in early 2026 through a partnership with Baidu's Apollo Go, and more cities are planned. You can also choose a dedicated "Autonomous" option where available.
Uber plans to launch its own robotaxi service in San Francisco by late 2026 using vehicles built with Lucid Motors and Nuro.
A Note About UberX Changes
In some markets, Uber is simplifying its ride categories. Starting September 1, 2026, UberX will no longer be available in Gauteng, South Africa.
Uber says this is because many of the same vehicles were being used across Uber Go, UberX, and Comfort, making it confusing for riders. Drivers can still operate on any product their vehicle qualifies for, including Uber Go and Comfort.
This type of change may happen in other regions too, but for now UberX remains the standard option in most cities worldwide.
UberX vs. Uber Black
The main differences are the level of luxury and the price. Here is a quick comparison:
| Feature | UberX | Uber Black |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Standard sedan (Toyota Camry, Honda Accord) | Luxury sedan or SUV (BMW 5 Series, Cadillac Escalade) |
| Driver | Standard driver meeting basic requirements | Professional, commercially insured, 4.85 plus rating |
| Price per mile | Standard rate (about $1.00 per mile) | About 2.1 times UberX |
| Free wait time | 5 minutes | 15 minutes |
| Best For | Everyday rides, commuting, errands | Business trips, special occasions, airport travel |
