Puerto Vallarta Taxi Fares Explained

Puerto Vallarta taxis charge zone-based fixed rates rather than using meters. City fares are set by official rate charts carried in vehicles; crossing between zones adds extra, and rates apply per vehicle, not per person. Within-zone trips have a minimum, with surcharges for each additional zone, and paying in pesos is standard.

Airport taxis at Puerto Vallarta International (PVR) are a separate, federally licensed system and are more expensive. They are prepaid at booths inside the terminal before you exit, with prices based on destination zones such as Marina Vallarta, Hotel Zone, Downtown/Romantic Zone, Mismaloya/South, and Nuevo Vallarta. For example, a sedan to Marina Vallarta is about 442 pesos, while Downtown/Romantic Zone is about 616 pesos, and Suburban or van options cost more.

Ride-hailing operates legally in Puerto Vallarta but not in neighboring Nayarit, and airport pickups require crossing the pedestrian bridge. Uber and DiDi are authorized; InDriver is not. A typical 16-minute Uber ride averages around MXN 98, while buses remain the cheapest option.

About Taxis in Puerto Vallarta 🚕

City taxis are plentiful 24/7 and can be found at official sitios, hotels, restaurants, and along the Malecón. Vehicles include sedans, Suburbans, and vans; vans cost roughly twice a sedan for up to 8 passengers. Rate charts are posted or carried in vehicles, and fares are per vehicle regardless of passenger count. A Romantic Zone sitio example is Sitio #4 at Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas.

At PVR airport, only federally licensed airport taxis may pick up arriving passengers. Aeromovil and Transportes Terrestres are the two authorized companies, offering sedans, Suburbans, and minivans. You book and pay at kiosks near the terminal exit, in pesos or by card, and tell staff your destination zone and luggage needs. Leaving the airport via the pedestrian bridge can access cheaper city taxis or ride-hailing, but involves a ramp and luggage handling.

Uber and DiDi are authorized in Puerto Vallarta, while InDriver is not. Water taxis run from Los Muertos Pier and Boca de Tomatlán to Yelapa, Las Animas, and Mismaloya, and city buses cover local routes; regional buses go to Sayulita, Bucerías, Boca de Tomatlán, and the Botanical Gardens.
