Montevideo Taxi Fares Explained
Montevideo taxis use a meter that combines a flag drop charge with a ficha, the unit that ticks for distance and waiting time. Fares are set by the Intendencia de Montevideo and split into Tarifa 1 for daytime and Tarifa 2 for nights, Sundays and holidays.
A ficha advances roughly every 100 meters traveled or 30 seconds stopped in traffic. A typical 5 km ride across neighborhoods like Pocitos to Centro costs about 430 to 480 pesos, depending on traffic and time of day.
Airport trips from Carrasco International Airport add a supplement and are often booked at the official taxi counter. Riders can pay cash in Uruguayan pesos, and many taxis also accept credit cards or apps.
About Taxis in Montevideo 🚕
Montevideo's taxi fleet is mostly black with yellow roof signs, operated by individual owners affiliated with radio cooperatives. Real companies include Radio Taxi Centenario, Taxi Radio Montevideo, Taxi Radio del Este, Radio Taxi La Paz and Taxi Directo.
You can book by phone through these radio taxis or use apps like Uber, Cabify and InDrive. Taxis wait at stands downtown, in Pocitos, Punta Carretas and at Carrasco International Airport (MVD), the main gateway about 20 km from the city center.
Common routes run along Avenida 18 de Julio and the Rambla, linking Ciudad Vieja, Centro, Tres Cruces and the airport. Airport taxis have a dedicated counter in the arrivals hall and charge a fixed supplement on top of the meter.
