Liberia Taxi Fares Explained

In Liberia, official taxi fares are set by the Regulatory Authority of Public Services (ARESEP) and are calculated by taximeter based on distance and time. There are separate tariff systems for regular city taxis and airport taxis. Regular red taxis charge a base rate of €1.58 for the first kilometer and €1.58 per additional kilometer.

Airport taxis, which are orange, have a slightly higher base rate of €1.84 for the first kilometer and then €1.53 per kilometer. Waiting costs apply, but there are no extra fees at night or weekends. For comparison, Uber rides are often cheaper, with fares like $9 from Liberia city to the airport.

About Taxis in Liberia 🚕

Official taxis in Liberia are red with a yellow triangle on the door, while airport taxis are orange. These are the only legally permitted taxis. You can find them at taxi stands, especially outside the airport and in the city center. Always ensure the driver uses the meter, known locally as 'Maria'.

Pirate taxis (piratas) are unregulated red cars without official markings. They are often unsafe and not insured. To avoid them, look for the official taxi emblem on the door and check that the license plate starts with the appropriate provincial code (e.g., TSG for Guanacaste).

To hail a taxi, you can flag one down on the street or call a dispatcher. Popular ride-sharing apps like Uber operate in Liberia but are blocked from picking up at the airport. If arriving at the airport, use the official taxi stand outside arrivals for fixed rates.

Safety tips: Always ask the driver to start the meter, report any refusal to the authorities, and avoid accepting rides from unmarked cars. For longer trips, consider booking a private shuttle for convenience.

Taxis in Liberia are generally safe and reliable, especially official ones. They can take you to nearby beaches and national parks. Fixed rates for popular destinations are sometimes posted at the airport taxi stand.
