Guanajuato City Taxi Fares Explained
In Guanajuato City, taxis generally do not use meters, so riders agree on the fare before the trip; Frommer’s notes taxis are reasonably priced and abundant except between 2 and 4pm. The airport serving the city is Bajío/Guanajuato International (BJX), about 27–30 km away, and the only option into town is a private taxi paid at an airport booth. The ride takes roughly 30–40 minutes, and there is no public transport from BJX to Guanajuato City.
From the Guanajuato bus station, about 6 km southwest of town, taxis are the practical way to reach the center; sources put the short ride at around 40–60 pesos and note there are no taxi stands selling tickets, so you pay the driver directly. In town, the local Minero Ejecutivo app is recommended, and UberX is also listed for Guanajuato with an average 13-minute trip around MXN 83, though one local guide says Uber is not really an option.
About Taxis in Guanajuato City 🚕
Guanajuato’s taxi scene includes the local Minero Ejecutivo app, plus UberX for app-based requests; Uber’s Guanajuato page lists local taxi services such as Taxi Marfil, Taxi Yerbabuena, Taxi Santa Teresa, Taxi Puentecillas, Taxi Silao, Taxi Coecillo, Taxi Franco, Taxi Comanjilla, and Taxi Bajío de Bonillas. At BJX airport, taxis are arranged through a ticket booth inside the arrivals hall, with payment accepted in cash and sometimes US dollars but not credit cards. From the bus station, taxis wait outside and take passengers directly to the historic center or Valenciana/CIMAT area.
Within the city, taxis are the most reliable motorized option for visitors, especially for trips between the center and CIMAT/Valenciana; public buses also link CIMAT with the center for about 10 MXN. Because Guanajuato’s streets are narrow, hilly, and partly underground, a car is not efficient inside the city, and taxis are used for longer stretches rather than walking routes. Frommer’s notes taxis can be scarce between 2 and 4pm when office workers head home.
