Dar es Salaam Taxi Fares Explained
Dar es Salaam taxis generally do not use meters, so drivers and passengers negotiate the fare before departure.
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA/DAR), the official rank is just outside arrivals, but there is no published airport tariff; fares depend on destination, traffic, and bargaining.
Uber and Bolt both operate in the city and quote upfront prices, often below a negotiated street-taxi fare, which makes them a useful benchmark.
Traffic is a major factor: the airport is about 12 km southwest of the city centre, yet the drive can take 25–30 minutes late at night or 60–90 minutes during weekday rush hours (roughly 7–9 AM and 4–7 PM).
A fare agreed before setting off does not change if you sit in congestion, while app-based fares can rise with time. Late-night arrivals after about 9 PM usually face much lighter traffic, but ride-hailing availability drops after midnight.
Typical in-town fares run around Tsh7,000, and airport-to-city rides are commonly negotiated in the TZS 35,000–60,000 range.
About Taxis in Dar es Salaam 🚕
Standard Dar es Salaam taxis are usually sedans, identified by white license plates with a taxi number on the side; air conditioning is not guaranteed.
Uber and Bolt are widely used, and pre-booked private transfers are available through services such as Kiwitaxi and Airport Transfer Portal, with fixed prices and meet-and-greet at Terminal 3.
Kiwitaxi offers vehicle classes from Economy to Minibus 19PAX, with child seats on request.
Local transport includes dala dala minibuses and bajaj tuk-tuks, but these are not practical for airport arrivals with luggage. The Dar es Salaam BRT and commuter rail serve some urban routes.
For Zanzibar, Azam Marine and Kilimanjaro Fast Ferries run from the city port, about 12 km from the airport; taxis to the ferry terminal are common, and fares are higher to areas like Masaki, Oyster Bay, or the Msasani Peninsula.
